My Lucky Monday

Remember this awesome lantern giveaway by Brown and Cote de Texas? Well I got an email this morning saying I am the lucky new owner of a Custom Iron and Glass Lantern! I am so excited and thankful to be in receipt of such an incredibly generous prize--especially since Joni had to be breaking records with the number of contest entries!

Jill Brown, the owner of Brown is letting me choose between the four candle lantern (seen in one of Joni's installations in the top photo) and the single bulb version. While I love both, I think the solo with filament bulb will look really great in our house. The best part is that my husband likes it too--it's a miracle! I have a couple of places that I am considering hanging it, so stay tuned for the reveal...

Just in case you were wondering which item I chose as part of Brown's 1st Dibs Shopping Spree contest, it was the vintage bar bells. I love the classic shape and think they would make clever doorstops!

We all love those iconic black and white photographs of Jackie O. running around New York City in the early 1970's. "Smash His Camera" is the sad/funny/thrilling story behind many of those images taken by the infamous Ron Galella. Whether you love or loathe the paparazzi, this documentary is a really interesting look at the price of fame, the first amendment and what constitutes "art". On HBO now, trailer below.

When I wrote about the Julius Shulman documentary back in September of 2009, I had no idea it would take so long for it to come to Atlanta. But come it will in June to the High Museum. (As much as I love Atlanta, I hate waiting for movies to wind their way around to us). The good news is, not only is the screening free, but it will be a part of Modern Atlanta 2010.

While MA is only in its fourth year, it is quickly becoming one of my favorite design events in town, the highlight of which is the Modern Atlanta Home Tour. You may remember this home from last year's tour, photographed here for Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles.

Yes, this is the same house. Business up front, party in the back.

The interiors use the same logic, morphing from traditional turn-of-the-century roots into something unmistakably modern. I could not get over the guest bedroom, suspended in glass above the kitchen. While Atlanta is not really known so much for modernism, we do have a few surprises to share.

I am a bit behind on my shelter mag perusal, but this Brooklyn brownstone caught my eye while taking the Eyjafjallajokull reroute home. All of a sudden I want to paint every surface that is not made of textured wood and tobacco-hued leather, pure white. (From New York Magazine, photographed by The Selby).

Omm

One of my favorite things about Barcelona is that every era of architecture and design is celebrated. You can visit the carefully preserved ancient city dating from 600 A.D. in the morning, a Gothic palace at noon, an early 20th century Gaudi masterpiece late in the day, and then retreat to a post-modern hotel for the evening.

Here are some images of the Hotel Omm, winner of multiple design awards and a prime example of how Barcelona's architecture continues to flourish beyond the ages.

The Omm Lobby doubles as swingin' bar and lounge until late in the evening. Great for multi-cultural people watching!

Many of the guest rooms look out on Barcelona's L'Eixample district, brimming with 18th and 19th century architecture. The hotel lies within the famous Quadrat d'Or (Golden Triangle), with what has been called the world's greatest living museum of turn-of-the-20th-century design.

Other guest rooms overlook the quiet courtyard, which serves as a garden for the hotel's restaurant, Moo. The glass boxes are actually skylights which naturally illuminate the restaurant below.

Moo has a Michelin star and the cuisine looks as contemporary as the space in which it is served. Just about every meal we had in Barcelona was unbelievable.

The Omm's rooftop terrace has a view of the top of Gaudi's biomorphic La Pedrera, built between 1906 and 1910. Gaudi made even the ventilation towers look interesting.

Another picture of the roof with Philippe Starck Bubble Club Chairs in the foreground and Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia in the background. I am pretty sure a crane or two was photo-shopped out of this picture, as the Cathedral has at least another sixteen years before the next phase will be complete--just in time for it's hundred year anniversary.

And finally, we have the view from the street and the visitor's first impression. The limestone facade looks like the pages of a book being opened. I think that is an appropriate metaphor when visiting any new city, but especially one as rich in design history and inspiration as Barcelona. Hopefully we will return one day--perhaps to see how La Sagrada Familia's construction is coming along.

Saarinen & Scott Ingram

I have saved so many images of Eero Saarinen's Pedistal Table, that I had to create a separate file to hold them all. So naturally, I was excited to see that one of my favorite Atlanta artists had included the iconic Tulip as subject in his most recent show.

Digging these retro guest bathrooms at The Mark. Fresh off a redesign by Jacques Grange, they include my favorite new bathroom accessory...Disappearing Mirror TVs!

I know there has been a lot of discussion as to who actually watches these things, but I am sure I would. Blow drying and straightening my hair can get really boring. And now that I know that sitting and watching TV can increase your death rate, it makes sense to view those thoughtful programs while engaging in another activity.

Westside Story

To some, Atlanta has the reputation for being made up of a series of soulless strip malls frequented by overweight racists. While I am sure you can find an unfortunate bit of such in the South, The actual city of Atlanta has come a long way in terms of art, design and culture. For every clear cut, metro-area suburban cul-de-sac, Atlanta has an artist, gallery owner or restaurateur determined to leave their unique stamp--despite that fact that it can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. This is why I was especially proud to find Atlanta's burgeoning Westside Arts District featured in today's Sunday Times. More photos here.

Flowers and Candlight

A friend asked me about the little wood "vase" I used to hold roses earlier last week. Funny they should ask, because it's actually candle packaging that I thought was too pretty to toss. There's a watertight vase tucked inside, but I thought the grainy wood gave my yellow roses a more autumnal feel than the usual glass or silver.

The candle is by Voluspa's James Boyce Collection. I bought mine at Gramercy Fine Linens & Furnishings. In case you are not in Atlanta, they are also available here.

While it is generally considered a faux pas to burn fragrant candles while cooking or eating, this line was designed specifically for that purpose by chef James Boyce. (Sounds like a good Thanksgiving host gift to me!)

And if it makes you feel any better, the boxes are made from sustainable Palownia wood without the use of stain or lacquer. My scent of choice is "Herb Garden", which is very fresh and subtle.

It's always interesting to see how Atlanta's shop owners decorate their own homes. Jayme Armour Leffler, owner of Armour & Co. Home Emporium let the Atlanta Journal and Constitution into her 1920's cottage and it's actually refreshing to see that it's not a "showroom". She mixes the items she sells in with her personal collection of antiques for a very approachable feel.

Lucky for me, all of my friends in the arts are super talented. One in particular is Walker Lamond, author of the aforementioned blog turned book, Rules For My Unborn Son.

If you're unfamiliar with the material, it's just as much about style as it is solid advice on how not to be a jackass (right down to the Pantone perfect cover). The vintage reader meets Life magazine imagery adds to the sentimental journey. Some of these lessons may be exactly what your own parents taught you and some will make you laugh out loud, but I'm sure you will come across a few new words to live by.

Drama Is Dead

It's all in this article from the Washington Post. Whatever happened to just making a decent film that has at least one strong female character? Do that, and women (and men) will buy tickets. The worst part of this news is that it is usually the dramas that provide us with the most design inspiration. Now if you will excuse me, I am off to see Amelia.

Reading & Wallpaper

The floors and stairs were painted a cream color, but we left the original walnut banister untouched. I loved that hallway. I used to just go up there and sit in it and be proud of myself."

Have you read this book? While it's not really about interior decorating, it has its moments. It's actually about making a home away from home, the never pleasant end of a marriage, and is all based on the author's true story.

The book came to my attention, not from the Vogue article, which I missed, but from reading an interview with Whit Stillman, writer and director of one of my favorite films, Metropolitan. He mentioned that one of the actors in the movie (Gillies) had written a "very good book" about her family's move from New York City to a small town (with arguably disastrous consequences).

"We had ended up in Oberlin — in a big 1877, redbrick house we never could have afforded on the East Coast. It was our second year in Ohio. Before we bought the house on Elm Street we had lived for a year in a rented faculty house, but when we saw "Bricky," as we called it, we could not help but buy it and renovate it into our dream house. We spent all our money and took out a home-equity loan for William Morris wallpaper and a new water heater. I wish I had a picture because I'll never be able to write how great it was."

Though she never says for sure, I believe the William Morris wallpaper pattern to which Gillies refers, could be "Arbutus", designed by Kathleen Kersey in 1913. I wish I could find and example of it being used in a chic way, but all the photos I come across are from rather unfortunate bed & breakfasts.

Anyway, that concludes one of my infrequent suggestions for a good read. Those in NYC can catch author Isabel Gillies in person at the New York Society Library on October 15, 2009.

School of Athens

In honor of my Alma Mater's first home game this season, I thought I would post an image of "The Happening" by Lamar Dodd, a painting depicting the frenzy on the field after the Georgia Bulldogs won the National Championship in 1980.

Football tie-in aside, as many locals know, Lamar Dodd (1909-1996) is the namesake of the University of Georgia's School of Art and was a highly influential administrator and respected artist of the mid 20th century. (How cool are his Chuck Taylors?)

When he wasn't teaching, Dodd spent much of the 1950's traveling the world and developing his talent for symbolic abstraction and cubism. In 1963, he was hired as one of NASA's official artists. Thankfully, he returned to Georgia to continue to teach and support southern artists. Because of his influence, the Lamar Dodd School of Art is one of the best art schools in the country.

The 1963 painting above entitled "Modern Abstract" appears to be the University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band at halftime, which leads me back to game day.

Atlanta Outside

Don't get me wrong, I love my town. More often than not, the weather is good, we have loads of design talent, and the living is relatively easy. That said, I was still somewhat surprised to find Atlanta ranked as number three on Outside Magazine's list of America's Best Cities.

This classic wallpaper may have been the only thing reminiscent of summer in the August issue of Vogue. While I am not fashionably sophisticated enough to care about winter coats in mid-July, I do love the backdrop Vogue chose for this eighties-inspired spread. (This print seems to define that era just as much as the 1940's when it originally appeared on the scene).

Of course, if I thought I could get away with putting tropical wallpaper in my own house, I might. Alas, this type of thing would look slightly ridiculous in our cozy little cottage. I will save it for that beach house someday...

P.S. Does anyone know what kind of mirror (the larger of the two) that is? Or more importantly, where I might find one? It looks to be some sort of antique, reinforced safety glass. I am thinking that could be a good idea for one of my ridiculously tiny bathrooms.

The Art Behind Up

If you have not seen Pixar's "Up" yet, all I can say is that you are in for an artistic treat.

Lou Romano, one of the films production designers from 2005 to 2008, has dedicated a fascinating and lengthy post about Up's artistic direction on his blog. It is incredible to see the amount of work that goes into this type of animated feature.

Without giving too much away, the illustrations above were done after a research trip the Pixar team took to South America. The point of the drawings was to convey the feeling and style of the proposed film. To me, it has a mid-century, Miroslav Sasek vibe. It's almost a shame that these are just for experimental, pre-production purposes since they are so beautiful. However, the second illustration did secure a spot in the finished movie as the mural Ellie paints above the mantel.

More goat painting sightings--I think I am on to something.

Kidding aside, more paintings by "goat lady" Helen Durant have popped up in print--most recently in the the very cool home of son-in-law and fellow Atlanta artist, Andrew T. Crawford and family. (More photos of their home can be seen Here).

You may recognize Crawford as the creative force behind several of Atlanta's sculptural landmarks, such as the Federal Reserve Bank seen here, as well as several of the gates at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.

He also creates one-of-a-kind railings, furniture and fixtures. This rocker totally reminds me of something out of the creepy, but brilliantly artful Coraline film.

I don't think it is out on DVD yet, but I highly recommend a viewing for anyone in need of creative inspiration. (The stop-motion animation is simply badass). Just don't watch it at night by yourself.

Ansley Park Glass House, Atlanta

I know I have been all about cupcakes and magnolias lately, but in order to preserve what is left of my edge, I am also participating in MA09, a week-long celebration of modern design in Atlanta.

Out of the numerous events, of particular interest to me is the Modern Atlanta House Tour, happening this Saturday and Sunday. The tour will feature 13 contemporary residences in our city, including the Ansley Glass House pictured above.

I was also able to attend a screening of Objectified, an enlightening documentary about the humanity behind industrial design. This is the second film in a design trilogy by director Gary Hustwit of font flick Helvetica fame, which is now available for download on itunes or in DVD format.

UPDATE: I just received my June issue of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles and was thrilled to find a full spread of the Ansley Glass House and interiors--absolutely gorgeous.

Fresh Paint

I realize I have been bad about showing the "before" without the "after", so here is a glimpse of the freshly painted trim. (Pardon the weird upshade angle and the umpteenth use of Osa Johnson's book. Better photos coming soon!)

Right now you are probably thinking, "White. How creative.", but toning down the yellow really did make a huge difference and was well worth the hassle. Have not decided on a wall color yet, but for now I am not minding this creamy shade of neutral.

Speaking of having such a style-conscience neighborhood, I recognized this home front while perusing my latest issue of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles. I have often walked past and admired this house as one of the prettiest on the street, but who would have guessed that such a classic exterior would encase this modern mix of texture and light...

Of course, it makes sense upon learning that this home belongs to Kay Douglass, creator of the South of Market mini-empire. For those unfamiliar with SOM, the shops in Charleston and Atlanta are known for their unique collection of contemporary upholstery paired with rustic, repurposed accessories.

An example: a collection of salvaged french hangers at South of Market, framed for a modern effect.

Garden Party

One of the things I love about my new neighborhood is that it is comprised of early 20th century homes surrounding a picturesque park. But because we are in the city, our yards can be somewhat limited in size (and mine is on the extreme end of that spectrum).

While the occasional outsider may scoff at our lack of acreage, my neighbors take great pride in cultivating their private gardens--some of which overlook the downtown skyline through 100 year old oaks. And as part of the neighborhood's Centennial Celebration, ten brave homeowners will open their gates to the public and nosy neighbors like myself for the Duck Pond Garden Tour.

In case you are wondering why we did not get the invitation to be part of the tour this year, it's probably because our yard looked like this...

If anyone could use some landscaping inspiration, it's the people that live here. Stay tuned for how this mud pit turned out.

Ranch Dressed

When I think of chic getaways, Central Florida does not immediately spring to mind. However, the Creek Ranch on Lake Hatchineha puts a Babe Paley-esque spin on the swampy south. Since the early 1960's, this 400 head cattle ranch has been in operation, but only recently has it become available for group rental. Anyone up for a blogger convention?

Among the accommodations is "Fanny's Room", named for Atlanta art supporter and local flea market founder, Fanny Floyd Cocke. Her family now runs the ranch and leads year-round outdoor activities for visitors including cattle driving, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing or just lounging in style. If you must, the theme parks of Orlando are also just an hour away.

Trad Floral

While I am not exactly Eddie Ross when it comes to creating flower arrangements, I did learn a ton of helpful hints from his You Tube tutorial on the subject. And since I usually go with a single type of cut flowers thrown in water, I thought it would be fun to take a stab at making a "traditional centerpiece" using the Oasis foam method. (I know, so 1980's).

My first attempt was for brunch at a friend's house (above) and consisted of about $25 worth of pink and white tulips, green spider mums and belles of Ireland. I can't wait to try it again--although next time I hope my arranging skills yield something more like this...

Grey Gardens

A restored Grey Gardens Cottage in East Hampton, New York, photographed in 2005. The Beale family owned the famously dilapidated home from 1923 to 1979.

If ever a home could be considered a character in a story, Grey Gardens would qualify. Just in case you have not yet experienced the original 1975 documentary about the home and its lovably crazy inhabitants, there is still a little time left before the motion picture premiers this April.

It took me a second of watching this trailer to realize that this was the new version because Drew Barrymore's accent is so good. And while the original may be more inspirational for its message, the latter promises something stylish in its memory.

I also wonder how it would look with a Leontine Chopstick mono--even if that defeats the skin smoothing properties of the original product.

Speaking of Leontine Linens, how cool is Kim Hastreiter, co-publisher of Paper Magazine's collection of assorted monogrammed guest towels. I love the idea of having more than one design in a single setting (and the funds to make it happen).

What To Do

So, here is a blurry camera phone photo of my yet to be decorated office. What was once a screened porch will soon become my cozy work space and I am still debating whether to paint over the brick or keep it exposed. The minimalist decorator in me imagines how nice it might look under a coat of White Dove, but I worry I may be losing one of the few interesting elements in our otherwise architecturally bland home.

According to Dara from Domino, exposed brick can "suck the life out of a room", but I am still not 100% convinced.

Once you commit to painting brick, there is no easy way of going back. However, a white background would give my growing art collection a lift.

Decisions, decisions. Any advice?

To celebrate, I am marking my calendar for Atlanta's 70th Anniversary of Gone With the Wind. The April 19th event, which coincides with the Atlanta Film Festival, will include discussion panels, multiple receptions and concludes with a screening of GWTW at Atlanta's historic Fox Theater.

The premier of Gone With the Wind in 1939 at the Loew's Grand was considered to be one of the most exciting events in Atlanta's history. In case you are wondering why the anniversary celebration is not being held at the original theater, please refer to the link in my sidebar regarding historic preservation.

The moment I have been dreading has arrived--it's time to choose the trim color. Why paint at all? Well, because the previous owner left us with absolutely every surface coated in a shade that looks like a manilla folder that was left in the smoker's lounge at the airport for 20 years.

I am ready for things to start looking fresh and clean and not so much like this...

But even with all of those semesters of Color Theory behind me, I still believe that choosing the perfect white is a mind-numbing crapshoot complicated by a myriad of latitudinal factors. The only thing I firmly believe, is that better quality paint yields the best results (unfortunately for my wallet). So, back to the paint store I go for more samples.

(Extra points if you can name those teeth).

Moving On

Anybody still out there? I know it has been a while since my last post, but I have a good excuse (for the last few weeks at least--before that it was simply year-end blog fatigue).

So far, 2009 has been all about packing and stressing over moving into a new house. Even though we have done this a few times, I forget how physically and mentally exhausting a move can be. I don't know how Jeff Lewis does it again and again. For the first few weeks, it feels like you are camping and lost in your own house (and not because it is too big, as this one most certainly is not). We have spent hours searching for missing electrical cords to hook up computers and are currently watching the laundry pile grow until our dryer is fixed (damaged in the move, natch). At least we finally have hot water--and more importantly, cable!

Anyway, I hope everyone out there in decor blog-land is having a wonderful new year despite all of this depressing shelter mag news. (Domino, wtf?) I know my list of home projects just became a lot longer, so hopefully I will have something to share soon. If I could only remember where I packed my camera...

This Friday, James Bond is back with his passport full of exotic stamps. I am usually not an action movie goer, but 007 films with their beautifully shot destinations are the exception. Quantum of Solace lists seven different countries in the film location credits and will take place mainly in Europe and South America.

In the meantime, I will soothe my vicarious vacation lust with Concierge.com's list of James Bond's Greatest Travel Moments. Never mind that they forgot to include one of my favorites...

A play on the traditional Christmas wreath and stocking featured in Cottage Living, accented by the ubiquitous (but still lovely) Imperial Trellis.

In case a Leica isn't in the Christmas budget this year, here is an inexpensive alternative for the stocking--and quite possibly the best invention since TiVo.

The GoGo Gorillapod is a flexible, mini tripod that attaches to your camera and can cling to almost any surface. It's perfect for those situations when you want your entire group in the picture, but you don't want to bother a passerby or risk having a stranger run off with your camera. (Does that ever happen in real life, or just in the movies?) It can also be used as a stand for your iPhone.

Since we don't have Slim Aarons following us around, the mini tripod is how we took advantage of this photo op. (The result was our 2006 Christmas card).

With minimal water, this wreath made of succulent plants stays green year round. Why didn't Martha think of this? Oh wait--she did. Here are directions to make your own.

Another idea for a Thanksgiving hostess gift is to send potted succulents from an establishment like Succulent L.A.. The mission behind this "flora design" firm, conceived by actress Samantha Mathis and interior designer Ryann Davis, was to create a low-maintenance, environmentally responsible alternative to cut flowers. And trust me--these plants are idiot proof.

They also make pretty place holders (and take-home favors) for your dinner table.

Viva La Top Design

I was at the Coldplay concert during the Top Design finale, but I finally had a chance to catch up with it on Tivo.

Now that all is said and done, I have to comment on what a VAST improvement this second season was over the initial run. The final contestants were bigger talents, the spaces were more challenging and the addition of India Hicks and Jeff Lewis was welcomed. But most notably, the ear-bleeding opening from Season One (complete with pillow fight) is gone. It's a miracle that anyone made it past the first 20 seconds of the last go round.

This season, I laughed, I cringed, and at times became so inspired that I would pause mid-show to start projects in my own house. I won't spoil the winner in case you are a late viewer like I was, but just wanted to say nice work Bravo! I am keeping my fingers crossed there will be a Season Three.

Lush Life

"I'll live a lush life in some small dive" - Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967)

I am not sure if the owner of Atlanta's Lush Life Home and Garden had the lyrics to this jazz standard in mind when naming his store, but it is always what I am reminded of when visiting.

Lush Life is the type of shop Jeff Lewis would patronize (in the supportive definition) if he was a local. The aesthetic is masculine and modern, yet as lush and lively as the sign on the door suggests.

And it is the only house in Atlanta with two live palms in front--not an easy feat in our winter climate.

I look forward to seeing what Lush Life's Bill Hudgins plan is for the front porch and terrace of Atlanta's upcoming Christmas House. Above is an example of one of his simple and chic arrangements photographed for Christmas House sponsor, Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles.

And in case you are unfamiliar with the aforementioned tune, I suggest picking up a copy of John Coltrane's version, recorded in 1957. It would make a great stocking stuffer!

Joye Hirsch

I was so sad to learn that one of Atlanta's great interior designers, Joye Hirsch had recently passed away from ovarian cancer. Her neutral palette and edited design style helped set her apart from the crowd in a time when Atlanta was still clinging to chintz and chotzkes.

My time working with Joye was brief, but she was instrumental in reintroducing me to the Atlanta design world after my time in New York. Her appreciation for contemporary art was equal to her knowledge of American antiques and I credit her for acquainting me with the local galleries and the work of artists like Peter Garfield. Her basement studio was also where I got to know Lee Kleinhelter of Pieces when we were both working as Joye's design assistants years ago.

Joye Hirsch's work has been photographed for numerous magazines over the years, including the most recent issue of Southern Accents where a Hanukkah table she designed is featured.

We will miss you Joye.

Is it just me or is Pottery Barn looking vaguely Eddie Ross these days?

I know Eddie Ross did not invent the painted secretary or hutch crammed with creamware, but he has been a design star lately and I think we can credit him with reinvigorating the New England approach to decorating. Of course Pottery Barn is obviously lacking Eddie's personality and styling, but even the chair "artwork" in the catalog reminded me of one of his recent decoupage projects.

Pink Wallpaper did a great post back in January about the Pottery Barn designer knock-off phenomenon. What do you think--is Pottery Barn poaching off of the designers or just being inspired?

Jack-O-Antlern II

Inspired by my husband's original Jack-o-Antlern, I decided to give it a try myself this year. I did not have the energy to go all out on the face--carving pumpkins is exhausting!

While I doubt anyone would actually want to emulate this project, I thought I would mention that I bought these hunting antlers at a sporting goods store and spray painted them along with the pumpkin. (My apologies to the environment for having such an un-green pumpkin this year, but hopefully I am keeping one less deer from being lured to his untimely demise).

Stick A Fork In Me, I'm Done

For the last ten years, I have been using my great-grandmother's sterling silver for everyday use. In the beginning, it made me feel special, elevating all of those takeout moments into something a little more highbrow. But this morning when I reached for a spoon, all I found was an unappetizing black film coating dull and lifeless metal. I know my silverware needs to be polished, but didn't I just labor over that chore a couple of weeks ago? I can't take it anymore. Today I broke down and ordered dishwasher safe, stainless steel flatware. Convenience winning out over style feels kind of like trading in the convertible for a minivan, but I am hoping that I can satisfy both the angel and devil sitting on my shoulder with this Kyoto Flatware from Crate and Barrel. I already had a few rogue pieces of this pattern floating around, and I like it for it's similarity to Tiffany and Co.'s 1961 sterling Bamboo pattern below. (The pattern is discontinued, but can be still be collected via Replacements).

The good news is that my old silver will be polished and ready the next time I need it. In the meantime, I may take a cue from the Asian motif and incorporate orchids into the holiday table as Cottage Living has done.

Shocked

For the past decade, Southern Accents has presented us with a pretty, but somewhat sleepy selection of pale blue and beige bedrooms. Imagine my surprise to turn the page and discover this high contrast, David Hicksian wonder by Atlanta designer Barbara Howard.

The bedroom was designed for the Showhouse at Reynolds Plantation, part of Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. I had to do a double take--this room belongs to a lake house in rural Georgia? The times are a-changin'.

The featured fabric pattern is "Zimba" by Schumacher. The rest of the home is more typically Southern and subtle in palette, but has a few quiet nods to 1970's design. Click here for the tour.

Even though Lake Oconee is only 1.5 hours east of Atlanta, I have yet to visit. One of these days, I am going to hop over for a day of pampering at The Ritz Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation. For the time being however, I am staycation city.

Nice try, Bravo. I caught you trying to slip this classic Buckhead home into your montage of OTP McMansions the other night on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Maybe most of America won't notice this house is actually WITHIN the city limits--30 miles away from where your story was taking place. Of course this is of no bother to me, but perhaps our metro area cousins would not want this old house (without it's own bowling alley) being mistaken as one of their own.

How design fabulous was last week's "Jet Set" episode of Mad Men? I was lamenting the fact that there are no good photos of the Palm Springs interiors until I found a this delicious assortment on Hatch (posted by fellow Atlantan, The Bubb Report). I am seriously crying over the fact that there are only two more episodes to go until the season ends.

According to commenters, "The Jet Set" could have been filmed at Frank Sinatra's former Palm Springs home, Twin Palms. This could also be totally wrong, since mid-century modern architecture can start looking overly familiar to my untrained eye. Still, it is fun to imagine. Update: The "Jet Set" house is not Twin Palms. It was designed by California architect Ed Niles and it was built in the late 1990's in Malibu. Whatever--it is still makes for an awesome backdrop.

In other Mad Men news, the show will be a featured category on one of my longtime TV favorites, Jeopardy, this Friday night. It will be a perfect storm for this television nerd.

Favorite local gallery owner, Emily Amy (pronounced "ah me") has a new blog with some great tips on collecting contemporary art. I had to borrow a few to share...

Emerging artists are not necessarily less talented than established artist, and they usually cost less too!
Go with your gut when you are choosing art. Let it elicit an emotional response in you, and when it does, you will know it is right.
Works on paper are always a great option when a little money needs to go a long way.
Don't listen to the "rules," if you want to collect several pieces by the same artist, go ahead--it's your collection.
Start small: if you can't afford large paintings, then buy small ones. They often have the same effect.
Buy local - Whether it is a local artist or a local gallery, you will likely feel more of a connection with the piece and you will be supporting your local talent!
