Style in the American South

Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana.

Despite our sometimes regrettable past, the South lays claim to it's own unique brand of style. Courtney graciously asked my thoughts on what makes decor in this part of the world special, and has posted them with lovely illustrations here.

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on this subject on Stlyecourt. You were right on, and I think that most of all Southern style has as much to do with the heart as it does with the mind.

I just watched "Inteview with the Vampire", so Oak Alley was on my mind. I would love to visit someday.

I am honored that Style Court included me--thanks for reading!

I don't know how southerners can drink sweet tea in such mass quantitiy--or at all for that matter. It's like squirting syrup directly into your mouth. I guess I did not inherit that gene.
Though I do love grits and bourbon (not together), so I don't feel like a total alien.

Well said on Style Court! I can't imagine life without family pieces, although my family has a few pieces they aren't willing to part with just yet!

On tea--half sweet, half unsweet at Chick-fil-A is the way to go.

Oak Alley is one of my favorite places on Earth. I have to visit it every couple of years. It's so peaceful. On the register you will find Princess Margaret and hey: Molly Ringwall, Actress. Those trees were planted over 100 years before the present house was built and there is a column for every tree.(28)
LOVE That Mr. & Mrs. Stewart that restored it left the signatures of all the workers and craftsmen that have ever worked on the home.
