What is Swanky?

How design fabulous was last week's "Jet Set" episode of Mad Men? I was lamenting the fact that there are no good photos of the Palm Springs interiors until I found a this delicious assortment on Hatch (posted by fellow Atlantan, The Bubb Report). I am seriously crying over the fact that there are only two more episodes to go until the season ends.

According to commenters, "The Jet Set" could have been filmed at Frank Sinatra's former Palm Springs home, Twin Palms. This could also be totally wrong, since mid-century modern architecture can start looking overly familiar to my untrained eye. Still, it is fun to imagine. Take a photo tour (or rent it for the weekend) here.

Poolside at the Twin Palms, then and now.

Update: The "Jet Set" house is not Twin Palms. It was designed by California architect Ed Niles and it was built in the late 1990's in Malibu. Whatever--it is still makes for an awesome backdrop.

In other Mad Men news, the show will be a featured category on one of my longtime TV favorites, Jeopardy, this Friday night. It will be a perfect storm for this television nerd.

I'm trying to catch up with Mad Men On Demand, but I may have to skip ahead to this one.

Sorry to be constantly gushing about this show. I would watch them in order. I think they keep getting better.

I keep missing the show but hearing about the interiors (and exteriors now). Looks like I'm missing a lot, I love that first shot, and if this is swanky I'll set the DVR tonite!

And on a related note who on earth is Dick Whitman going to see?????

I have no clue. It also looks like he may be following Joy and her nomads to the Bahamas next week too. Can't wait to see...

i was blown away by the interiors of "the jet set" episode. it was pure eye candy! looking forward to the next episode, too, since it seems like it's always the penultimate episode that packs the most punch while the last episode of the season is more reflective.

I am so happy to find about about the Flair book via you! I didn't know about that one - shame on amazon for not putting it in my personal recommendations.

It cracks me up that I had to take pictures of my TV screen in order to get the Mad Men interior shots!

Where do you live in ATL? I'm in the Highlands.

So glad you did. That episode deserves documentation.

I live in Buckhead (but I'm not a Betty).

I am a TiVo person all the way - I rarely watch a show 'live'. I make an exception for Mad Men - I can hardly wait until Sunday night. I will be very bummed when the season ends!!!

That "Mad Men" house reminds me of the 1962 Barbie Dream House. Love it.

I am in love with Mad Men. It was conflicting with the new season of Californication which I loved last year but this year is so skeezy that Mad Men totally wins. It's much sexier and those interiors (excepting the knotty pine which I lived with in my parents house in the 60s) are gorge.

I am wondering if knotty pine will make a comeback now. It feels more 1940's to me, but I think the point is to not look make the sets so cliche. My grandparents still have it in their kitchen and den. They actually took all the paneling with them and re-installed it when they moved houses in the 70's.

BA: for me Knotty Pine never went out of style. The orange color is I believe what turns people off. For a friends's house, I did a creamy yellow thin wash over the orange and then a cream colored glaze. The effect was a bit too pale, so I went back over the whole thing with a thinned down glaze of Burnt Umber, which highlighted the grooves. The knots vaguely showed through. The whole room had a somewhat light butternut look to it. It had too much character to throw out.

I loved this episode. Just loved it.

The poolside chairs and umbrellas sure looked like JA's choices for The Parker.

And I agree, paneling is poised for a comeback :)

I think knotty pine is making a comeback. I can't tell you exactly where but I am certain that I've seen it in a couple of recent magazines.

By the way, YOU can tell me in the following episode why Don is really Dick? And who was that woman? I totally missed something.

Old now, but thought I'd chime in. The house in Jet Set was NOT the Sinatra house, and it was NOT the one referred to in the update. It is located in Tujunga. Got this information straight from Amy Wells, the set designer on the show.
