Closet Lust II
Private closets are looking more like small boutiques these days.
I first saw Mariah Carey's palatial closet on an episode of MTV Cribs. With a new season on the horizon, MTV has been re-running the infamous (and somewhat ridiculous) house tour. Catch it if you can. (Top photo from Architectural Digest).
In case you missed the show, more photos of Mariah Carey's home are featured in Cribs: A Guided Tour Inside the Homes of Your Favorite Stars.
Julie Janklow's acrylic-and-glass, 500 sq ft. dressing room was created by the builder of the Christian Louboutin boutique in downtown New York, and inspired by the movie, Mommie Dearest. I apologize for the grainy image, but the original photo in Vogue was the size of a postage stamp. Was there was not any extra room to spare on the other 1000 pages? You can see more of the Janklow apartment and September's Vogue at Habitually Chic.

I have lusted after Maria's closet since that episode too! Just so glamorous...and spacious! More like a clothing room, and it's any girl's dream I believe to have one :) Great post!

sad to say that we're moving into a place that will house my first ever walk in closet - with light to boot (I'll be sharing it with the hubby but oh well). I'm a tad bit excited. great post. domino had an issue about fabulous dressing room closets that i just drooled all over when I got it imagining what I would do if I had to design one. fun post!
Thanks for the nice comments.
All I can say is yay for having closets at all. My New York apartment had exactly none, which is fairly common in pre-war buildings. I think that is how my obsession started.
I could live in that closet.
That top image is so beautiful...and so decadent!
Those closets are gorgeous! Closets tend to be the neglected rooms, but perhaps this is changing!
Hi Brilliant Asylum,
Thanks for the shout out! It's sad that these closets are bigger than my entire New York apartment...although, I do have a pretty big closet which is why I put up with said small apartment ;-) A girl's gotta have someplace to put her shoes!
Love your blog - sorry it took me so long to get here - I'm linking to you right now.
BA,
Great examples of the whole personal closet-meets boutique thing. Wow. I'm also used to barely having a closet, so it's hard to comprehend. I think Aerin Lauder's is still my favorite --seems more residential :)
I wonder if Kelly Wearstler's latest (personal closet) will look like a store?
POC, I agree that the closet is becoming a more respected room in the house. One day I may start up another blog just on closets--like bibliostyle has done for books.
: )
Thanks Mrs. Blandings, I will do the same.
SC, I Aerin Lauder's closet is beautiful--especially with that desk. Though, if forced to choose, I would pick Eva Jeanbart Lorenzotti's closet to be my own--along with everything in it.
That first closet is amazing!
insane. all of them. i love a great closet. and you're right, the key is to make them feel like a boutique. i long for a walk in closet. something that doesn't require me to dig around on the floor for dust bunny covered mate to a shoe.
I just adore well designed closets. Closets are rare in the UK, everyone has wardrobes, but I miss my closet. I may try to find a way to turn a spare room into a closet/workspace. A pretty desk and my laptop surrounded by clothes sounds like my idea of heaven!
the 1st picture : my perfect dressing
I'd love to have a pretty closet, all done out with lights and shelves and rows and rows of hanging space....
But mine is about the size of a shoe box!
Wonderful site, I have been browsing and added you to my blog must-reads!
