Desk Set

Last week, visions of Aerin Lauder's closet/office danced through my head, but reality is setting in and I need a place to work. Now. Until all of my my holiday shopping is done and I inherit a billion dollar cosmetics corporation, I am operating on a next-to-nothing decorating budget.

Instead of staring wistfully at an empty room for the rest of the year, I fished this computer table, circa 1982, out of my parents' basement to use as my temporary desk. I am hoping to hide it under a coat of white paint for the time being.

Perhaps I could keep the base and add a Lucite plank a la Kelly Wearstler, photographed in her office. (From Glamour Magazine).

Of course, a modern take on the sawhorse table in this office by Ruthie Sommers is hard to beat. (As seen on Pink Wallpaper).

Oh I love that last image - of course the glass would probably fall off the saw horse stands knowing my luck!

I would love a cool home office but I guess I need my own home first...

Where in the world do you find a big chunk of lucite like that? KW's office looks so warm and cozy.

Be inspired- working on a shoestring budget can lend itself to tons of creativity! I can't see what you come up with.

Ever thought of covering your desk in paper (w/ a coat of matt varnish for durability) ?

I like the lines of your chair. To me, it feels very "Chapman Radcliff." That Ruthie office was so cool because she had the sleek desk mixed with a very, very trad sofa covered in an almost 80s style bold chinoiserie floral, I think. And I love the inspiration board she did too. But I also love Kelly's large mirror. Can't wait to see what you do.

I love the modern sawhorse! I'm still waiting on inheriting that billion-dollar business myself, but things aren't looking so good!

KW's office is fantastic, and that lucite is a good idea, but probably more costly than glass...either way I bet your office will be fab in no time!!

That closet is fantastic! I can only imagine the clothes she has in there!

Your work space looks so uncluttered. I'm always clearing crayons and stuffed animals from my desk.

I love the idea of a glass and chrome desk. Of course I'd be continually running into the corners of it.

I'm sure that big budget or not, you'll wind up with a very elegant office. Good luck and keep us posted!

Paint your desk gloss black to emphasize its shape then put a large modern lamp on it for contrast. 70's lucite is glam I admit but it is a big trend rite now and wea ll now what happens to the big trends....

With inspiration like KWID & Ruthie you can't go wrong. I am sure it will all come together marvelously. Good luck.

I am partial to Lucite. I did a post on lucite sources a couple of weeks ago. I also love chrome furniture and black lacquer. The idea of painting your wooden desk in black gloss sounds pretty appealing too. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!

Can you sew? Why not make a slipcover for the desk out of white denim. I love a rectangular table covered by a slipcover! I think it would look great and if you can sew, - it would cost next to nothing. OR you could make it out black and white damask fabric. ok = I really like my idea.heheh
